Students in school grades 1 - 12 or enrolled in college may participate in Student Affiliate activities, if studying with a teacher who is a member of the Texas Music Teachers Association. Further information on any activity is available in the Student Affiliate Handbook.  Deadlines listed on these pages may have changed, so please check the Handbook carefully.

Awards

Whitlock Memorial Scholarship Award: Named for Dr. E. Clyde Whitlock, this award is given any eligible senior who has accumulated at least 100 points during their high school study.  The first place winner receives an engraved plaque and $200 plus $1 per point earned.  The second place winner receives $100 plus $1 per point.  The third place winner receives $50 plus 75¢ per point.

Collegiate Scholarship Award: A $2,000 scholarship will be available to a junior or senior collegiate SA member.  See the Texas Music Teacher for further information.

Student Affiliate State Participation Award: This award is based upon the number of points earned through participating in SA activities during grades 1-12.  A minimum of 20 points is required for eligibility.  The first place award is $300 and a plaque.  Second place is awarded $250 and third place is awarded $200.  A $50 award will be given any student who achieves 20 points.  See the Student Affiliate Handbook for further information.

Convention Ensemble Programs

Student affiliate members who have passed the appropriate state theory test may participate in one of the convention ensemble programs (this requirement not applicable to collegiate members). Local associations are responsible for organizing their groups. Ensembles are often composed of duet teams playing on ten or more pianos, although other instruments are sometimes used. Ensembles often appear in costume. Groups may perform either with or without a conductor. All ensemble members must perform by memory. Currently, three high school and six Texas/American concerts are scheduled to perform at the state convention.
State Deadline: March 1. 

Original Composition Contests

Student composers are encouraged to enter solo or ensemble compositions. Entrants must have passed the appropriate state graded theory test. Compositions may be entered in any of the ten divisions, which are based on school grade. Cash awards are given to 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners at the Original Composition Recital at the state convention. Winners are encouraged to enter their composition in the MTNA Composition Contest. Local deadlines may vary. State deadline: January 15.

Performance Contests

With the exception of collegiate contestants, participants in the performance contests must have passed the appropriate state theory test. Contest categories include orchestral instruments and classical guitar (solo and concerto), organ solo, piano (solo and concerto), and vocal solo. All categories include divisions for grades 9-10, 11-12 and collegiate. Orchestral instruments and piano include grades 7-8 as well. Participants compete locally and proceed to district and state competitions. Local and district competition dates vary. State competitions are held at the convention in June.

Publication Competition

This activity is designed to promote excellence in music research and publications. Participants may be in grades 1 -12 or be enrolled in college. Topics are listed here  and are included in the Student Affiliate Handbook. Winners will receive cash awards and winning articles will be published in the Texas Music Teacher Magazine and on the web page Student Winners section.  

Theory Program

The theory program is designed for music students in grades 1-12. Students must be current Student Affiliate members. Tests are administered by local associations in a formal classroom atmosphere. Students who make a score of 90 or higher will receive a medal. Additional awards given to graduating high school seniors include the Mansfield Gold Medal Theory Award for students who have earned medals every year in grades 4-12; the Loving Gold Medal Theory Award for students who earned twelve gold medals; a Twelve-Year Plaque for seniors who earned medals every year for twelve years; a Twelve-Year Participation Certificate for passing twelve grade levels; and a Six-Year Award for medalists in the Instrumental or Vocal tests.

MTNA/TMTA Performance Competitions

Teachers interested in entering students in these competitions must have paid membership dues by September 12. These competitions include competitions for piano, brass, percussion, string and woodwinds on the junior high level. High school and collegiate competitions include piano, brass, percussion, string, woodwind and voice competitions. Collegiate performers may also participate in the chamber music competition. Awards and entry fees vary. Consult the TMTA Handbook and www.mtna.org for more details. 

MTNA/TMTA Student Composition Competition

Teachers interested in entering students in these competitions must have paid membership dues by September 12. There is no theory requirement. Consult the TMTA Handbook  and www.mtna.org for more details.

World of Music

World of Music is designed to teach music history.  There is no theory requirement.  Tests for  grades 1-3 are based on World of Music by Carolyn Jones Campbell.  Tests for grades 4-12 are based on The World of Music, A Music History Syllabus, by Elinor L. Duff (copyright 1979, 1980 and 1981, by Texas Music Teachers Association.)  Study materials are available from the TMTA office.  Students scoring 90 or above are awarded medals.  Additional awards are given to students who have earned medals from grades 4-12 (Janet McGaughey World of Music Award) or who have earned medals every year (Carolyn Jones Campbell World of Music Award).  A twelve-year participation certificate is also available.  Click here for more information.


TMTA Convention Activities for Students

In addition to Student Affiliate activities at the convention, Texas music students have the opportunity to participate in the following activities at the Texas State Music Teacher Association Convention. Activities are for students of all ages, levels of accomplishment and instruments, including vocalists.

TMTA All Star Festival

The TMTA All Star Festival is a non-competitive TMTA performance event.

Chair: Sandy McClenahan  smcclenahan@worldnet.att.net  

Date and Location: Saturday during the TMTA annual convention in June. If registration exceeds the times available, the Festival may be scheduled on Sunday according to the availability of personnel. Times will be assigned as received.

Honors Recitals and Awards: Students will receive a ribbon and critique at Honors Recitals adjudicated by TMTA Collegiate Student Chapter Members. Performances will be on a stage in a session room. Once times have been assigned, changes to the schedule will be made only if vacancies are available and only if the student has time conflicts with other TMTA convention events. Requests for any changes should be submitted by the teacher to the chair of the All Star Festival. No parental requests will be accepted.

Registration Deadline: All required forms and payments must be postmarked by May 1 and mailed to the TMTA Office attention TMTA All Star Festival.

Fee: Non-refundable fee of $10.00 per student of TMTA members; $20.00 per student of non-TMTA members. Checks should be payable to TMTA.

Student Eligibility: Any student who has received a Superior or I rating in a local association festival, NFMC festival, or UIL event form September 1 through May 1 of the current year. No Student Affiliate dues or theory requirements apply.

Chamber Music Festival

This festival encourages participation in small group ensembles. A workshop, recital, and other performance opportunities will be available for participants at the state convention. Complete chamber groups or individual students may register. State Deadline: March 1.

TMTA Ensemble Music Contest

Date and Location: An ensemble music performance contest held at the annual convention.

General Information
1. There are three categories for the Ensemble Music Contest:
         a. piano duo/duets (classical)
         b. duo and mixed chamber groups (classical)
         c. jazz/pop ensembles
2. Each category above has two age divisions. For students not in these age groups, all must enter the higher age category.
         a. Grades 7-9
         b. Grades 10-12
3. Music ensembles shall be no less than two performers, and no more than fifteen.
4. Music ensembles shall be submitted directly from local associations to the state
contest. It is imperative that their performances exhibit high standards and are worthy
of presentation at the state level.
5. Only two pianos (acoustic) will be provided.

Eligibility
1. Students of both TMTA members and non-members may participate.
2. An ensemble member may not enter in more than one ensemble per category.
3. Participants of a winning ensemble of the Ensemble Music Contest may not reenter the same competition with identical participants at the next convention.

How to enter: Follow instructions on the registration form available on the website at
www.tmta.org or from the TMTA office, the contest chair, or your local association president.

Registration Deadline: All required forms and payments must be postmarked by March 1 and mailed to the TMTA Office, attention TMTA Ensemble Music Contest.

Fees are non-refundable, and include student registration for the TMTA Convention:
1. $10 per student of TMTA members.
2. $20 per student for non-TMTA members.
3. $100 per non-member coach

Repertoire
1. Repertoire is left to the discretion of the teacher/coach, but in classical contest categories, selections must be true chamber works, not concerti or other works employing orchestral reduction. Arrangements for piano are not allowed.
         Grades 7-9: Left to the discretion of the teacher.
Grades 10-12: Should be a major work by a well-known classical composer: e.g., Mozart, Schubert, Brahms, Dvorak, Debussy, etc.
2. Selections may be combinations of music for brass, piano, guitar, strings, wind
instruments, voices, or percussion instruments and may include any number of pieces
or movements.
3. Memorization is not required.
4. The time limit is 10 minutes. Entrants who exceed this limit may be stopped but not disqualified.
5. All music must be published and copyrighted. Reproduction of third-party works that are subject to copyright protection constitutes copyright infringement unless a license to reproduce such work has been obtained or another exception to copyright infringement exists.
6. The repertoire that was submitted on the registration form must be performed.
7. Repeats are left to the discretion of the ensemble. Cuts in the music are not permitted.

Awards and performances
1. Any conductor must be a student performing in the ensemble.
2. There will be no ties in any category.
3. Ensemble Music awards in each category (for the ensemble, not individuals):
         a. First Place winning ensemble $100
         b. Second Place winning ensemble $75
         c. Third Place winning ensemble $50

TMTA Convention Projects

TMTA Convention Projects and TMTA Music for Life are two new activities being developed and made possible by a matching grant received in 2005 from the Music Teachers National Association Foundation Fund.  Sample projects were on display and a Music for Life Open Forum was held during the June 2006 TMTA Convention.

Date and Location: Deadline is May 1.  Selected projects may be displayed during the convention.

Eligibility: Student Affiliate members in grades 1-12 may submit projects.

Fees: $10 for the first participant; $6 for each additional participant

Topics: Topics from Student Affiliate World of Music, Student Affiliate Publication Contest and Music for Life Topics may be used for Convention Projects.

Convention Projects Form

Guidelines:

         Any student is eligible to submit a project using the Publication Contest, World of Music, or TMTA Music for Life topics. 

·     It is suggested that all projects be judged at the local level before being presented at state.

·     Projects may be individual or group and may include students across grade levels. The project must relate to information all students participating have learned during the year.  A group project may involve 2 to 6 students.

       Each group must submit a TMTA Convention Music Project Form.  $10.00 registration fee for the first student, $6 for any additional students registering as a group

  • Some tangible item must be made to represent the project. For example, a binder or poster with pictures and a report may be submitted by a group who wrote and presented an opera, or by a student who learned a composition by a particular composer.
     
  • Projects may include posters, games, compositions, art, etc.
     
  • The final presentation of a project must be no larger than 4’ x 4’ square. Pictures or posters of larger projects may be submitted.
     
  • If a project involves electronic equipment, providing the equipment is the student group’s responsibility. TMTA will not be responsible for any equipment.
     
  • Special request must be made for placing the project under a protective plexi-glass cover. These covers are available on a first-reserved, first-served basis.
     
  • Each group will submit a bibliography.  MLA Style is the recommended format for the bibliography. The bibliography may be included in a binder, a plastic cover, or attached to a poster; it should be readily accessible to view from the front of the project.
     
  • The names and grades of students, the teacher, and the local music teachers association must be included on a 3” x 5” card in bold lettering, and attached to the project.

          All participants at the state level will receive a ribbon of participation at the convention and will
          receive 1 participation point toward senior participation awards.
 

TMTA Guitar Workshop

Clinic in which select students (by audition) perform for an experienced clinician in a master class format and all students participate in a collegiate-style workshop under the tutelage of the clinician for group instruction in general technical and musical improvement.

Fee: Non-refundable fee of $12.00 per student of TMTA members; $24.00 per student of non-TMTA members. Checks should be payable to TMTA.

Student Eligibility: Guitar students in school grades 4-12 and adult students are eligible for this clinic/workshop. Students must provide their own nylon string or acoustic guitars at the clinic.  Electric guitars cannot be accommodated.


TMTA Keyboard Orchestra

The TMTA Keyboard Orchestra is a non-competitive instruction and participation activity that features groups playing ensembles using many sounds and rhythms available on digital instruments.
